Cocaine Trafficking Case Against Shiran Basik: Further Pre-Trial Conference Set for November 11

The Colombo High Court reschedules the pre-trial conference for alleged drug kingpin Shiran Basik and two co-accused to November 11.

The Colombo High Court Judge Nayomi Wickramasekara today (02) ordered that the case filed against alleged notorious drug trafficker Shiran Basik and two other defendants over cocaine trafficking charges be called on November 11 for a further pre-trial conference.

The order was issued when the case was taken up before the judge today.

Defendant Shiran Basik, who is currently being held in the custody of the Police Central Crime Investigation Bureau, was produced before the court under heavy Police Special Task Force (STF) security.

During today’s proceedings, the State Counsel handed over files containing documents to be served on the defendants to their defense counsel. President’s Counsel Dilan Ratnayake, Attorney-at-Law Chaminda Athukorala, and Attorney-at-Law Wasantha Pitigala, representing the accused, informed the court that they would examine the documents and notify the court of any deficiencies at the next hearing.

The State Counsel informed the court that the stock of illicit drugs submitted as court exhibits in this case is currently under the custody of the Government Analyst’s Department.

Addressing the matter of producing the exhibits in court, High Court Judge Nayomi Wickramasekara noted that although it is necessary to call for the production of the case evidence, no order would be issued at this stage as the High Court’s evidence room (exhibit room) has currently collapsed.

Consequently, the court ordered the case to be fixed for a further pre-trial conference on November 11.
