Former State Minister Chamara Sampath’s Private Secretary Remanded Over Corruption Charges

The Colombo Magistrate’s Court has ordered the Private Secretary of former State Minister Chamara Sampath Dassanayake to be further remanded until October 9 in connection with corruption allegations.

The order was issued when the suspect was produced before Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama today (25).

Officers from the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) informed the court that the suspect had bypassed standard procedures to facilitate the export of phosphate exclusively to three selected companies.

Investigating officers revealed that the suspect aided and abetted in securing export permits for these companies and solicited and accepted a bribe of Rs. 8.1 million, which was deposited into his personal bank account.

The Bribery Commission also informed the court that another seven suspects connected to the incident are expected to be arrested.
