The Irrigation Department has issued a Red Alert warning of a high risk of major flooding in low-lying areas along the Mahaweli River within the Pasbage Korale Divisional Secretariat division, triggered by heavy rainfall in the upper catchment areas of the river over the past few hours.
The Irrigation Department urges residents in the vulnerable low-lying areas and drivers using roads running through these regions to exercise extreme caution.
Furthermore, authorities strongly advise members of the public living close to the banks of the Mahaweli River in these areas to remain vigilant and take all necessary precautions to protect themselves and their property from potential floodwaters.
