Two additional intervening petitions were filed in the Supreme Court yesterday (August 28) expressing support for the proposed 22nd Amendment to the Constitution.
One petition was submitted by the leader of the Nava Sihala Urumaya, Sarath Manamendra, while the other was filed by K. Sarath Lal Perera, Chief Secretary of the National Organization for the Protection of Pension Rights.
The petitioners submitted to the Supreme Court that the relevant constitutional amendment bill has been presented in strict compliance with legal procedures.
Furthermore, the petitioners requested the Supreme Court to rule that the bill can be passed in Parliament without requiring approval at a national referendum.
