Analysts have turned their attention to the recent arrest of the son of former State Minister Shantha Bandara—a prominent figure in previous governments—in connection with a Rs. 20 million (2-crore) robbery.
Observers noted that police investigations were conducted thoroughly and methodically leading up to the arrest. On July 13, Shantha Bandara’s son reportedly masterminded the robbery targeting a Chinese national, involving several other individuals in the operation. Following an extensive investigation into the suspects, police formally arrested him seven days later after confirming all details.
Analysts point out that this incident highlights a growing crisis among former politicians and their families, who previously relied on political power and public funds to sustain their lifestyles. With that access cut off, some have now resorted to organizing criminal activities and robberies. It has also been revealed that a liquor license had previously been obtained under this son’s name when he was just 18 years old.
