The Judicial Service Commission has filed a charge sheet against Moratuwa Magistrate Thilina Gamage over allegations of illegally possessing a calf elephant—a case that had previously drawn significant public attention.
The Commission has granted the suspended Magistrate 21 days to show cause as to why disciplinary action should not be taken against him for alleged misconduct. Gamage had earlier faced legal proceedings before the Colombo High Court over the same accusation.
Notably, on December 21, 2021, the Attorney General’s Department acted in a way that led to Gamage’s acquittal. However, the Judicial Service Commission has now revived the case internally by reintroducing the same set of charges, signaling continued scrutiny over the matter.
