The Minister of Trade, Food Safety and Cooperative Development, Wasantha Samarasinghe, said in Parliament today (5) that steps have been taken to sell rice and coconuts through Sathosa from today as a solution to the shortage in the market,
He said this in response to a question raised by an opposition member during the debate on The Vote on Account for the first four months of 2025.
Accordingly, Minister Wasantha Samarasinghe stated that coconuts are obtained from government-owned coconut lands and the Coconut Development Board and are priced at 130 rupees per coconut. He said nadu rice would be sold at 220 rupees per kg, samba at 230 rupees per kg, and Keeri samba at 260 rupees per kg through Sathosa.
He said there are reports that large-scale millers possess rice stocks needed for consumption in the country and that the government is negotiating with them to release the rice stocks in the country until the imported rice arrives.
He said that in the past, rice production has been carried out without any formal study of the country’s overall consumption of rice, including the requirement for poultry and other industries.
Minister Wasantha Samarasinghe added that about 1.5 million coconuts have been planned to be released through Sathosa.
