The tri-member government, led by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, has initiated the challenging process of producing fertilizer from the Eppawala phosphate deposit.
Yesterday (10), a group of researchers, including Prof. Gomika Udugamasuriya and Prof. OA Ileperuma, went on a special trip to the phosphate deposit. Speaking to the media at the site, they revealed that they are ready to produce phosphate fertilizers in the country, saving a large amount of foreign exchange spent on importing phosphate fertilizers for agricultural purposes.
It has been revealed that the government is ready to start production at the beginning of next year as the first manufacturing industry of the new government. By the end of the previous regime, they had prepared to sell the Lanka Phosphate Company and the phosphate deposit. However, all plans have been made to stop and recover it as a local industry.
