Kurunegala Chief Magistrate Bandula Gunaratne today ordered the acquittal of all charges against Obstetrician and Gynecologist Dr. Shafi Sahabidin Mohammadi of Kurunegala Teaching Hospital, who was accused of performing sterilization.
He has been acquitted on the advice of the Attorney General, and his travel ban has also been lifted.
The case filed due to political interference by several mothers against Dr. Shafi, alleging he had performed sterilization on pregnant mothers at the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital, was heard for more than five years.
Wimal Weerawansa, Udaya Gammanpila, Athuraliye Rathana Thero, Channa Jayasumana etc. Members of Parliament at that time called this incident racist and claimed that about 4,000 mothers had been subjected to sterilization operations.
Later, the Criminal Investigation Department arrested the Obstetrician and Gynecologist of Kurunegala Teaching Hospital Shiabdeen Mohammad Safi on 24 May 2019.
The director of Kurunegala Teaching Hospital at that time also alleged that Dr. Shiabdeen Mohammad Safi had been involved in the sterilization process.
