President meets Attorney General

The newspaper ‘Desaya’ has revealed that the President, Anura Kumara Dissanayake, has summoned the Attorney General and sought advice.
It is in connection with the gazette notification published announcing that Lakshman Nipunarachchi has been nominated for the position of Member of Parliament, though he still needs to take the oath of office.
Before this, a gazette notice regarding Basil Rajapakse’s appointment as a Member of Parliament had been issued before he took the oath of office. He had taken oath as Minister of Finance and Economy before taking the oath as a Member of Parliament.
President Anura Dissanayake has asked for the Attorney General’s opinion. The Attorney General has stated that it is not legal to take oath as a minister in a situation where one has not taken oath as a member of Parliament.
The President has accepted the attorney general’s opinion, demonstrating his respect for legal advice. He is now leading the executive with a three-member cabinet, the world’s smallest cabinet.
