Despite attempts to keep the convening of community police committee members at the provincial level to launch Ranil Wickremesinghe’s election campaign secret, this move and the political objectives behind it have been exposed.
This meeting, which is being held today (14) in Kandy, has been fully organized by Pohottu councillors of the Ranil faction, namely Mahindananda Aluthgamage, Lohan Rathwatte and Dilum Amunugama. However, the entire burden for this has been launched based on the Police Endowment Fund and top-down deployment of police officers. The Pohottu councillors have urged the police to have more than 10,650 people from Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Matale districts participate in this meeting today. The operation launched by Matale Senior Superintendent of Police Division to gather the people is an example.
A circular has been issued to invite five members each from one community police committee attached to Sigiriya, Laggala, Wilgamuwa and Handungamuwa police stations. Two thousand five hundred five community police committee members have been ordered to participate from Matale district alone. Those members have been ordered to be brought to the Gatambe, Kandy stadium by 3:00 in the evening. Similarly, the higher police officers have ordered by circular to have personnel from Nuwara Eliya and Kandy districts also participate.
To provide transportation facilities to the participants, buses and trains are used, and this is done in a background where the daily passenger transportation activities of the general public are completely collapsing. Arrangements have been made to provide the participating members with a lunch packet, drinking water bottle, evening snack, and soft drinks.
The relevant orders also emphasize the need to reserve a suitable hotel near Gatambe Stadium for the dignitaries and other guests who will participate.
