Official statistics reveal that the government’s estimated tax revenue dropped drastically last year, and economic analysts have also pointed out that this reveals the dangerous situation in the country’s economy and people.
Last year (2023), the estimated total tax revenue was Rs.3130 billion. It was later raised again to Rs. 3400 billion. However, the total tax amount received was Rs. 2,720 billion.
The largest share of taxes has been earned from indirect taxes imposed on goods and services. The tax share was estimated at Rs. 1,763 billion, but only Rs.1,399 billion was earned. Also, the targeted tax amount on foreign trade was rs. 455 billion, but only Rs. 335 billion was earned.
Meanwhile, the Auditor General has pointed out on various occasions that the amount of taxes that can be collected but have not been collected has exceeded one trillion rupees (1000 billion) in the last few years.
