The Election Commission has written to the Secretary of the Ministry of Finance to allocate Rs. 2.2 billion as basic expenses until the day of an election. The request has been made as several cases related to the local government elections are scheduled to be heard soon.
It is estimated that 09 billion rupees will be needed to spend on the local government election. However, the Commission has indicated that the expenditure will be around 2.2 billion rupees until the polling date.]
The Commission has stated that the remaining Rs. 6.8 billion would be required only after one and a half months from the election to settle the bills related to the services obtained, including fuel, electricity and printing.
Meanwhile, the members of the Election Commission recently met with the Prime Minister and State Administration Minister Dinesh Gunawardena. They discussed the matters necessary to hold the postponed local government and provincial council elections as soon as possible.
The Commission has requested the Prime Minister to prepare the necessary background for conducting the elections, and the Prime Minister has said that the necessary arrangements are being made.
The Commission has also informed the Prime Minister that due to the postponement of the local government elections, the public servants who have come forward as candidates are facing severe problems and to prepare a proper programme for their benefit.
