The Bar Association has told the Speaker that they had observed that the rule of law and the independence of the judiciary were being affected by the statements made by some Members of Parliament inside and outside the Parliament regarding the court, the cases in the court and the judges. Attorney-at-law Kaushalya Navaratne, President of the Bar Association, has stated this before Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena.
This was stated during a meeting held in Parliament between a group of members including the President of the Bar Association, Attorney-at-Law Kaushalya Navaratne, and Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena.
They have also said that the Bar Association expresses its regret over this situation as it has been seen that statements have been issued mentioning the names of currently serving judges. The President of the Bar Association asked the Speaker to pay attention to this matter and also submitted a written request to the Speaker regarding the matter.
Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena has stated that he would always stand up to protect the dignity of the judiciary, including that of the judges of this country and has said that he expected to draw the attention of the members in this regard.
