The legal field has drawn wide attention to the severe pressures being exerted while the fundamental rights petitions submitted against the measures taken by Ranil Wikramasinghe-Pohottu joint administration to cut off the government debt on a large scale through pension funds, including the Employees’ Provident Fund under the name of “National Debt restructuring” are being heard in the Supreme Court.
The legal sections are of the opinion that Speaker Mahinda Yapa’s answer to a question raised by Minister Harin Fernando in Parliament on the ninth is another decisive move in the conspiracy launched by the government. Harin Fernando, who was elected to Parliament from Samagi Jana Balawegaya and later joined Gotabaya Rajapaksa and now works closely with Ranil Wickramasinghe, raised issues related to EPF and pension fund cases pending in the court as a matter of privilege in Parliament.
In response to that question, Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena stated that no court can give orders regarding matters passed as resolutions of the Parliament. Before this, President Ranil Wickramasinghe made such statements to influence the court. Now it has become clear that the speaker and other coalition government ministers are also making the same threat under the guise of parliamentary privileges.
