We’ll rally people against water charges – Anura Dissanayake

They will immediately start mobilizing people against the excessive increase in water charges, says Anura Dissanayake, the leader of the National People’s Power.
Accordingly, he said they will hold a series of agitations and public awareness programmes throughout the country.
He said that the drug issue and the economic pressure placed on the people’s heads have strongly affected them.
“The prices of goods and services have gone up a lot through excessive taxation by the government. Similarly, due to the collapse of the economy, hundreds of thousands of people have become unemployed. While the people have to face various difficulties in buying fuel, electricity and essential commodities, the people have fallen into a situation where the fee charged for ‘water’, which is the most essential commodity of the people, has been increased excessively.
In a bid to fulfil the needs of the IMF, the government is greatly oppressing the people. We are ready to carry out an extensive campaign to demand the right to live against all these pressures on the people.
We are working to mobilize the people by starting an awareness programme to inform them about the vile move of the government. The people are suffering from severe mental pressure in the face of a severe economic crisis, and due to this, their health condition has also deteriorated. It is sad that the government acts as if it does not understand these issues,” he added.
