It is reported that 57 Sri Lankans who have been held in a camp on Diego Garzia Island for a year and a half are protesting by refusing to receive food and demanding that the group be released or sent to an area where the general population is.
It is also reported that these 57 people are being held in a joint British and American camp in the Indian Ocean area, and the authorities of the relevant camp have threatened them not to go out of the camp. Due to this, several Sri Lankans have tried to commit suicide and it is reported that 5 people who tried to do so have been taken to Rwanda.
They got stuck on the island while travelling to Canada in a smuggled boat from Pesale, Mannar. After 10 days of sailing, the boat had had an accident on the way, and then they have washed ashore at Diego Garzia Island. It is said that these Sri Lankans have been kept in the camp for 8 months now, even though they have been informed that they would be released.
However, they have been able to call their relatives through telephones from time to time, and through their relatives, they have told the foreign media that they were detained in the camp.
