We did not give the commission approval to postpone the election – Sunil Watagala

The National Executive Member of the National People’s Power (NPP), lawyer Sunil Watagala disclosed that the Election Commission was prepared to seek the approval of the party secretaries to postpone the local government election indefinitely, but they opposed it.
Lawyer Sunil Watagala emphasized that it was revealed from the explanations of the Election Commission that the sabotage was done by not allowing the election to be held due to the direct intervention of the President and the Cabinet. However, there is a court decision regarding the holding of the election on the 25th, he emphasized.
He further said that a defamation case has been filed against the Finance Ministry Secretary for not acting according to the said court order and that it is impossible to postpone the vote indefinitely when debates are going on in the court.
Dr Nihal Abeysinghe, Secretary of the National People’s Power, also joined the discussion held by the Election Commission with the party secretaries.
