It has been revealed in the Supreme Court that about 1,521 fundamental rights petitions have been submitted against the police department by various parties regarding violations of fundamental rights.
This was released through a statement made before the Supreme Court by a senior government lawyer while representing the Attorney General when a fundamental rights petition filed by Professor Arjuna Parakrama was called before the court.
This petition has been filed Alleging that the fundamental rights, including the fundamental human right to freedom of expression, were violated when on January 20 last, a peaceful protest march organized by professionals from Colombo University to the Ministry of Finance at Galle Face to demand solutions to the current economic crisis was harassed and obstructed by the police.
The Supreme Court, which has given time till April 28 to submit limited objections to the respondents, has also ordered to reconvene of the relevant petition on May 31.
