A protest organized by the Socialist Youth Union (SYU) was held in front of the Elections Secretariat yesterday (22nd) against the postponement of the local government elections and demanding that the election be held on the scheduled date.
Many social activists, including the national organizer of the Socialist Youth Union, Eranga Gunasekara, lawyer Manoj Nanayakkara and Shanika Silva, the operational member of the Aluth Piyapath organization, participated in the event.
The protesters displayed placards with various slogans protesting against the government’s attempt to postpone the election and demanding that the election be held as scheduled. Strict security was deployed around the Elections Secretariat, and Sarana Mawatha was closed entirely.
