The removal of the 20th Amendment, which arbitrarily consolidated the power of the President, has been hotly debated, and constitutional experts point out that Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe is setting a constitutional trap by bringing in various other proposals instead of removing that arbitrary power.
In a special statement issued on the 29th, Ranil Wickremesinghe emphasized the need to reactivate the committee system that existed under the Donmore government. Instead of directly removing the powers of Article 20, the Prime Minister has begun to adopt other tactics that could mislead the people in this way. The Constitutional process, which has passed three constitutional milestones, consisted of the Donomore Constitution – in force from 1931 to 1947, the Soulbury Constitution from then until 1972, and the Constitution adopted by the United Front government until 1977. The present Constitution has been maintained since 1978.
Despite this, Ranil Wickremesinghe has proposed to set up ten committees again according to the Donomore model. Through this, he uses a political ploy to keep the incumbent President in office. It should be remembered that it was Ranil Wickremesinghe, who planned as Prime Minister from 2001-2004, to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the invasion of Ceylon by the Portuguese. In the same way, this time too, various tactics have been used to mislead the society by singing the praises of the English imperialist era.
