Retired Major General Jagath Alwis, who was appointed Secretary to the Ministry of Public Defense by President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, and retired Rear Admiral Jayanath Colombage, who was appointed Secretary to the Ministry of External Affairs, have resigned.
Unconfirmed reports state that Jayanath Colombage, who was the Secretary to the Ministry of External Affairs, resigned due to personal reasons.
The Secretary of the Ministry of Defense has resigned this evening (23rd) following the protests that took place after the Rajapaksa thugs attacked Mynagogama and Gotagogama on the 9th. Jagath Alwis has resigned after giving a statement to the CID.
The immediate reason for his resignation is based on a false statement made by Senior DIG in charge of the Western Province Deshabandu Tennakoon regarding the Rajapaksa mob attack.
Deshabandu has become the main government official responsible for failing to prevent Rajapaksa’s attack on Gotagogama. Deshabandu has stated that it was on the orders of IGP Wickramaratne and former Secretary to the Ministry of Public Defense Jagath Alwis that the attack on Gotagogama was not stopped. It is reported that Wickramaratne and Jagath Alwis have given statements to the CID claiming that Deshabandu’s statement was completely false.
