The Archbishop of Colombo, Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith, has said that the rulers who come to power by popular vote have become wealthy, raised money abroad and have started businesses abroad. He said the fault of this corrupt system was exposed in the attempt to cover up the Easter attack.
Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith stated this while participating in the special Divine Liturgy held yesterday (1st) at St. Anthony’s Church in Padua, Italy.
Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith said that some people hid the information they received about the Easter attack to win the election and said from the former President to the former officials in charge of the security forces have also neglected their responsibilities.
The Cardinal also said that they did so because they wanted to say ‘we will protect the country, we will give justice to the country’ for the election.
He said if there was no such intention, they could have been informed regarding the impending crime and asked to get protection. However, politicians and officials exchanged a letter among themselves to protect themselves and sacrificed the innocent people.
The Archbishop of Colombo said he had sought justice for three years over the Easter attack but had to come to the international arena because the Sri Lankan rulers had done no justice. He also said, “Our intention is also to seek help to change the corrupt political system in the country,” he said. The Cardinal said many had known about the Easter attack but had allowed it to happen because of their need to win the election.
The Archbishop has said that politicians have allowed corruption to reign and society to deteriorate, and the law to go wild. As the highest-ranking official of the law is appointed by the President, he has been given the opportunity to act the way he likes.
The Cardinal said that a case against two persons in connection with the Easter attack was filed, but it was tampered with, the case was dropped, and the two persons were released. He said he prayed that the country’s people would be given the necessary strength to take Sri Lanka on a new journey.
