Vegetable shortage imminent

With no stocks of vegetables coming to the market, a severe shortage of vegetables could be expected. As a result, the prices of vegetables could further go up by next week, say traders at the Peliyagoda Wholesale Market.
Sources at the Peliyagoda Wholesale Market say that upcountry vegetable farmers have informed that they do not have a harvest to pluck or collect, and as a result, they are unable to supply vegetables to the market.
Wholesale prices of vegetables such as beans, carrots, brinjals, etc. have exceeded Rs. 300, and the wholesale price of a kilo of capsicum has risen to Rs. 450 say wholesalers at Peliyagoda.
It is revealed that the retail price of a kilo of vegetables such as beans, carrots and brinjals has come close to Rs. 500, while the retail price of a kilo of capsicum has increased to Rs. 450.
