Mawanella Police have arrested KG Piyatissa, Deputy Chairman of the Mawanella Pradeshiya Sabha, its member Palitha Wimalasena and another for assaulting a teacher at the Hingula Mederigama Maha Vidyalaya Mawanella, during a protest held by parents on the 3rd in support of the teacher-principal salary struggle.
After the attack, the teachers had surrounded the Mawanella Police Station on two occasions and staged protests against the failure by the Mawanella Police to arrest the thug politicians.
The situation had reached the point of creating another crisis in the country and the trade unions had emphasized that if these politicians were not arrested, teachers and principals of schools across the country would decide to launch a strike.
Teachers in schools in the Mawanella area went on strike yesterday (9th) and thousands of teachers and principals staged a massive protest in front of the police station.
Mahinda Jayasinghe, the General Secretary of the Ceylon Teachers’ Union stated that the trade unions were not ready to sabotage the education of children due to stupid politicians, but if the police act cowardly in front of politicians, the teachers and Principals will not hesitate to take any necessary action against it.
