The Public Health Inspectors Union has requested people to go into self-imposed lockdown from Monday to contain further spread of COVID-19.
Upul Rohana, the head of the Public Health Inspectors’ Union (PHIU), said they were bitterly disappointed with the Government for not declaring a lockdown at such a juncture that the country is plunging into a catastrophic situation due to highly contagious Delta variant. He said, “It seems that the Government does not have a clear-cut strategy to keep COVID at bay. We see some responsible people in the Government are just beating around the bush on the spread of highly contagious Delta variant in the country,” he said.
He said, “We will no longer insist the Government impose restrictions or lockdown as they continuously ignore our suggestion and the opinion of medical experts. He added that “That is why we request people to practise self-imposed lockdown starting from this Monday and continue it for at least seven days. Thus, people can collect the essential goods necessary for the next seven days over the weekend abiding by the health guidelines and practices.”
Urging the relevant authorities to make their decisions by coming out of air-conditioned rooms and see for themselves what actually happens on the ground, he warned that the number of COVID-19 cases and deaths are sure to rise drastically in the coming days.
