It has been revealed that the government is preparing to obtain US$ 40 million as interim compensation for the fire on X-Press Pearl that directly affected the country’s seas and marine life, as well as the fishing industry, and indirectly caused colossal damage.
Justice Minister Mohamed Ali Sabri submitted a cabinet memorandum on June 16. It is stated the US$ 40 million is the recommendation from the Attorney General.
The Cabinet Memorandum states that it is preparing to obtain this amount to be used to cover the expenses incurred by the Navy and the Air Force in extinguishing the fire, as well as in the areas of environmental pollution, economic damage, loss to the fishing industry, loss to the tourism industry and loss due to blockage of sea lanes.
Earlier, Rs. 454 million had been recovered from the Blue Diamond, which had caught fire on the East Coast. The Pearl Express has caused extensive environmental and economic damage, and five committees have been set up to seek compensation. It is noteworthy that no last date has been set for the recommendations of those committees.
