The President has summoned several Bhikkhus and clarified matters regarding the Port City Commission.
Following this explanation, the President has issued an official statement regarding a statement made by the visiting Bhikkhus. It states, “The Maha Sangha emphasizes that a country should not stagnate but should move forward commercially.”
What is clearly stated here is not about sustainable development in the country but about moving forward ‘commercially’. Minister of State Ajith Nivard Cabraal has briefed the Bhikkhus who participated in the discussion on the benefits that could be gained in the region from the establishment of the Port City Commission.
Impressed by the explanation, the Bhikkhus have said, “Expanding the land and opening the door to new investment opportunities is a victory for the country. Instead of spreading misconceptions and opposing everything, all must unite to rise as a nation.” They had also emphasized that the people should be given a proper understanding of the project and get their support.
It is clear that the announcement has been made in such a way as to give the impression that the entire Sangha community has approved the investments that are being made in the region for purely commercial purposes.
