India Records World’s Highest One-Day Surge in Covid Cases

India saw the world’s biggest one-day jump in coronavirus cases ever as a ferocious new wave grips the country, overwhelming hospitals and crematoriums and prompting frantic cries for help on social media. India reported 314,835 new infections today (22nd), topping a peak of 314,312 recorded in the U.S. on Dec. 21. People took to Twitter and Instagram to call for everything from hospital beds to medicine and doorstep Covid-19 tests.
Health officials in the north and the west of the country said they were going through a crisis, with most hospitals full and running out of essential supplies. India has reported nearly 16 million infections since the start of the pandemic, with the death toll nearing 185,000.
Meanwhile, hospitals across northern and western India including the capital, New Delhi, have issued notices to say they have only a few hours of medical oxygen required to keep COVID-19 patients alive.
