It is reported that the Cabinet has not yet approved the proposal to ban the burqa made public by Minister of State Sarath Weerasekara.
Addressing the media after the Cabinet meeting yesterday, Minister SM Chandrasena said that no paper on the burqa had been submitted to the Cabinet so far, and no discussion has been held in the Cabinet regarding that.
Speaking at a media briefing on the government’s
sugar tax fraud, Information Secretary of the JVP Vijitha Herath said that the government was selling the burqa issue with the intention of suppressing the public debate on the massive sugar tax fraud of nearly 16 billion rupees.
Meanwhile, the Pakistani government says that if the Sri Lankan government is going to ban the burqa, it will cause concern to Muslims all over the world.
