A motion has been filed to attach additional amendments to the petition submitted to the Supreme Court by the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) challenging the government’s proposed 22nd Amendment to the Constitution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Initially, certain bankrupt opposition factions and aligned organizations launched a campaign of false information against the amendment. The BASL, bringing together opposition representatives including those from Sajith Premadasa, Dilith Jayaweera, and Namal Rajapaksa, engaged in misleading propaganda, claiming that the amendment was aimed at extending the retirement age of the Chief Justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, once the draft bill was gazetted and tabled in Parliament, its actual scope and purpose became clear to the public. Meanwhile, to bolster those opposing the reforms, the BASL was among the first groups to challenge the proposed draft in the Supreme Court. Due to a lack of due diligence and patience by a few key individuals within the association to properly draft the initial petition, they have now been forced to file a motion adding missing components to amend their original submission.<\/p>\n
