Attorney-at-Law Udeni Weerathunga emphasized that the public has now come to realize that the current government represents a movement that brought a major transformation to the legislature and executive to engage in politics solely for the benefit of the entire nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Speaking at a press conference organized by Lawyers for National People’s Power (NPP) in Colombo on August 26, Attorney Weerathunga stated that citizens are already experiencing a system where policy decisions are made without personal interference or pressure on the judiciary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Elaborating further, Attorney Weerathunga noted:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Following the impact of the 1977 constitution and the systems established since then, the country suffered a multi-sectoral collapse. In contrast, under the present proportional representation system, a government with a two-thirds majority from a single movement was formed, alongside the executive. The legislature and executive mandated by the whole populace are responsible for enacting, implementing, and reforming necessary laws, while ensuring that the judiciary\u2014acting as the final arbiter\u2014remains truly independent.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She highlighted that to build the country as envisioned through the mandate received, it is vital to address existing shortcomings within the courts, create an environment conducive to independent operations, and utilize the mature knowledge and expertise of judges for the country’s progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Weerathunga expressed confidence that, unlike previous administrations, the current executive and legislature will not meddle in judicial affairs, but will instead foster the necessary environment for the judiciary to fulfill its role in uplifting all sectors of the nation.<\/p>\n
