Over the past few days, newspapers and internet news websites have reported the continuous gang rape of a young girl studying in a Tanamalwila school and a 13-year-old schoolgirl in the Panadura region.
It has been revealed that the Thanamalwila student was raped by 21 students studying in the same school, and the Judicial Medical Officer also subjected the student to severe mental pressure. Also, that school’s principal has been taken into custody on charges of concealing facts from the police. A mother of a student who raped the girl has been revealed to have continuously helped those students and has been taken into custody.
Meanwhile, a 13-year-old schoolgirl in Panadura district has been abused by a bus conductor and another group for two years, and five people have been arrested in this regard. By now, it has been generally accepted that there are many undisclosed tragedies regarding the generation of children who have become victims of the political culture that has dragged society into brutality.
Judicial Medical Officers and even principals of schools turning their backs on the victims instead of giving priority to the innocent children who become victims of such barbaric acts is a severe disaster that society should find means to remedy.
