The National People’s Power (NPP) emphasizes that Ranil Wickramasinghe should take responsibility for the attack on the pro-democracy protest.
The NPP emphasized this while addressing a press conference held at the JVP head office at Pelawatta yesterday (27th).
Tilvin Silva, the Executive Member of the NPP and the General Secretary of the JVP, Specialist Dr Nihal Abeysinghe, General Secretary of the NPP, Executive Member of the NPP Attorney at Law Harshana Nanayakkara, Executive Members of the NPP Vijitha Herath \u2013 Information Secretary of the JVP and K.D. Lal Kantha \u2013 Administrative Secretary of the JVP participated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The General Secretary of the JVP Said, “Ranil Wickramasinghe is trying to protect his rule by unleashing his dictatorial frenzy. Yesterday (26th), we held a peaceful demonstration demanding the right to vote. Ranil Wickramasingha had obtained injunctions from three courts for that protest. Then 28 people were injured and hospitalized due to the brutal attack on the demonstration. Two of them were in critical condition. One of those two, Comrade Nimal Amarasiri of Ratnapura, has lost his life. He is a comrade who was a candidate for Nivithigala Pradeshiya Sabha. The government led by Ranil Wickramasinghe should take responsibility for the loss of his life. We went to peacefully protest against the hijacking of the election, which is a right of the people. But Ranil Wickramasinghe is trying to protect his rule by unleashing his dictatorial frenzy.
It is a lie to say that there is no money to hold the election. No law or court has stopped the local government election announced by the Election Commission. The President is exhibiting a crazy behaviour by putting aside the election law and putting pressure on the officials, stopping the payment and not giving the amount approved in the last budget to the Election Commission.
The process of attacking the people who are acting according to their right to peaceful protest by a person holding the presidency he got by chance should be stopped very soon. If they try to move towards dictatorial measures, the NPP will adopt all the democratic measures that can be taken against it. The NPP expresses sorrow regarding our comrade who lost his life in this protest. No one’s life should be lost for democracy. Comrade Nimal Amarasiri joined the rally on behalf of the rights of our people; for the right to establish a regime of their choice. Therefore, we assure and declare that we will definitely lead this battle to victory.
People took to the streets because their right to vote was denied. The Independent Election Commission announced that the election would be held on March 9. We proceeded according to that election process. We came to Lipton Circus to force them to stop the illegal pressure to stop the election. This local government election should have been held last year.
According to the election law and the constitution, the local elections should be held in March. If we make it a tradition in our country to postpone elections until a date preferred by the President, then only the elections that the existing government can win will be held. Therefore, these actions should be defeated right from the beginning. In order to defeat it, we carried out a peaceful protest while engaged in filing lawsuits before the courts, informing international organizations and complaining to the Human Rights Commission. President Ranil Wickremesinghe should not be allowed to take the democracy of our country to its deathbed. This government and the President have no mandate from the people. Ranil Wickramasinghe is using the presidency he got by chance to carry out his madness. As such, we must rally all the forces that can be gathered on behalf of democracy and defeat this situation.
The President, who said he had no money to hold the election, spent a lot of money and held an Independence Day celebration. A republic procession was held. In addition, more wasteful expenses are being incurred. He is acting for the happiness of his team by imposing a huge tax burden that the people cannot bear. We have a struggle to win true democracy. This behaviour of the government shows that the President and the government are scared.
We will take all measures in the future to defeat the arbitrary anti-democratic measures of the government and to stop the insane suppressive moves of the government. We would never be instigated. We know the value of democracy. We know the value of human lives. The NPP is the only force that can unite tens of thousands of people and protest in a very peaceful and disciplined manner. It is such people that the government attacked. We are sorry for our comrade. We will not back down or waver. No one came to this protest for personal purposes. Therefore, we emphasize that we should all unite and defeat Ranil Wickramasinghe’s anti-democratic measures. We invite everyone to rally for this task.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
