The Court of Appeal issued a Writ Order Yesterday (28) cancelling the implementation of the recommendations given by the Presidential Commission, nicknamed the Mad Cat Commission, appointed by the ousted President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa.
The writ order given by the Court of Appeal also annulled the Cabinet decision taken on the recommendation of the ‘Mad Cat’ Commission on January 18, 2022.
The orders were given after hearing a writ petition filed by Janaka Bandara, Deputy Solicitor General of the Attorney General’s Department. A three-judge bench comprising the judges of that court, Nissanka Bandula Karunaratne, D.M. A Samarakoon and Lazar Tahir, issued the orders.
Retired Supreme Court Judge Upali Abeyratne, the Chairman, retired Court of Appeal Judge Chandra Jayathilake and former Inspector General of Police Chandra Fernando were the members of the Presidential Commission on Political Retributions appointed by Gotabhaya Rajapaksa. They were named as respondents in the petition.
It has been stated in the decision given by the Court of Appeal that this presidential commission exceeded its authority.<\/p>\n
