The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that the rapidly spreading strains of the Omicron and Delta Coronaviruses could cause “extreme stress” on healthcare systems, leading to a “tsunami of cases”. “Delta and Omicron are now twin threats driving up cases to record numbers, leading to spikes in hospitalization and deaths says WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
Speaking at a news briefing on Wednesday, he added that the rapid spread of the Omicron and Delta variants “called for the exhaustion of health workers and the collapse of health systems.” He also says that this situation puts much pressure on the health workers engaged in covid treatment around the world.
A record number of omicron infections are reported daily in several European countries, with France having the highest daily number of cases reported yesterday (29) at 208,000. The incidence of daily corona infections is also reported to be rising rapidly in Britain and the United States. With the onset of winter, especially in Europe, the spread of covid has reached a high level. The first case of the Omicron virus was reported in South Africa last month, and it has already become a major strain in some parts of the United States and Europe and is spreading rapidly.
