{"id":16640,"date":"2021-12-26T17:40:42","date_gmt":"2021-12-26T12:10:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lankatruth.com\/en\/?p=16640"},"modified":"2021-12-26T17:40:44","modified_gmt":"2021-12-26T12:10:44","slug":"archbishop-desmond-tutu-dies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lankatruth.com\/en\/?p=16640","title":{"rendered":"Archbishop Desmond Tutu dies"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Archbishop Desmond Tutu, the Nobel Peace prize laureate who helped end apartheid in South Africa, has died aged 90.<br \/>South Africa\u2019s President Cyril Ramaphosa confirming the cleric\u2019s death today (26th) said Archbishop Tutu had helped bequeath &#8220;a liberated South Africa\u201d.<br \/>Tutu was one of South Africa\u2019s best-known figures at home and abroad.<br \/>A contemporary of anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela, he was one of the driving forces behind the movement to end the policy of racial segregation and discrimination enforced by the white minority government against the black majority in South Africa from 1948 until 1991.<br \/>Tutu gained prominence through his work as a human rights campaigner.
