A group of artistes supporting apolitical Common Presidential Candidate Gen. Sarath Fonseka held a press conference at Colombo Hilton Hotel today. The press conference was convened by renowned artist Cyril Dharmawardene and a large number of artistes including W Jayasiri, Ranjan Ramanayake, Kithsiri Jayasekera, Kuma Attanayake, Upeksha Swarnamali, Chandrasoma Binduhewa, Wasanthe Moragoda, Kingsley Lose, Sepala Amarasinghe. Stanley Perera participated.
Renowned artist Cyril Dharmawardene explaining the reason for convening such a conference said, “Fine art is not one that has been isolated from other sectors. Fine art cannot be rescued when the whole country is moving towards destruction. We support Gen. Fonseka as we believe he could establish democracy and good governance in the country. We did not come here expecting answers from the Common Candidate for issues in the sector of fine arts.
Gen. Fonseka has come forward as the apolitical Common Candidate for the election. Hence, person following any political party could join his campaign. We would not resort to mudslinging at others like artistes who have joined Mr. Mahinda Rajapakse are engaged at present. When Gen. Fonseka is elected as the President on the 27th no harm would come to those artistes who support Mr. Mahinda Rajapakse. They would get all their demands. We have come here to express a political view – we would not agree to carry out a dog fight.
Mr. Chandrasoma Binduhewa said, “We brought Mr. Mahinda Rajapakse to power to bring prosperity to the country. But nothing happened. Instead we had to live amidst various threats. The government talks about democracy. However, the artistes with the government threatened me. Is this democracy?”
Mr. Kithsiri Jayasekera said, “The existing political system has not been good for the country. Fine art and politics are two different sectors. I would criticize my brother for any wrong. We are supporting Gen. Fonseka to bring victory to the country.”
Ms. Upeksha Swarnamali said, “Suddenly they cancelled shooting in January. There is no reason for such cancellation. This situation arose when I said I support Gen. Sarath Fonseka. I am very disappointed regarding such acts. There were several invitations for me to support the government. However, I would support General.
Kuma Attanayake said, “We support apolitical Common Candidate Gen. Sarath Foneka to set in motion the 17th amendment, to abolish executive presidency and bring in good governance.
W. Jayasiri said, “Law abiding people were harassed during the past. We support General to establish good governance.
