Artistes flock around ‘Swan’ PDF Print E-mail

altA group of artistes supporting apolitical Common Presidential Candidate Gen. Sarath Fonseka held a press conference at Colombo Hilton Hotel today. The press conference was convened by renowned artist Cyril Dharmawardene and a large number of artistes including W Jayasiri, Ranjan Ramanayake, Kithsiri Jayasekera, Kuma Attanayake, Upeksha Swarnamali, Chandrasoma Binduhewa, Wasanthe Moragoda, Kingsley Lose, Sepala Amarasinghe. Stanley Perera participated.

Renowned artist Cyril Dharmawardene explaining the reason for convening such a conference said, “Fine art is not one that has been isolated from other sectors. Fine art cannot be rescued when the whole country is moving towards destruction.  We support Gen. Fonseka as we believe he could establish democracy and good governance in the country. We did not come here expecting answers from the Common Candidate for issues in the sector of fine arts.

Gen. Fonseka has come forward as the apolitical Common Candidate for the election. Hence, person following any political party could join his campaign. We would not resort to mudslinging at others like artistes who have joined Mr. Mahinda Rajapakse are engaged at present. When Gen. Fonseka is elected as the President on the 27th no harm would come to those artistes who support Mr. Mahinda Rajapakse. They would get all their demands. We have come here to express a political view – we would not agree to carry out a dog fight.

Mr. Chandrasoma Binduhewa said, “We brought Mr. Mahinda Rajapakse to power to bring prosperity to the country. But nothing happened. Instead we had to live amidst various threats. The government talks about democracy. However, the artistes with the government threatened me. Is this democracy?”

Mr. Kithsiri Jayasekera said, “The existing political system has not been good for the country. Fine art and politics are two different sectors. I would criticize my brother for any wrong. We are supporting Gen. Fonseka to bring victory to the country.”

Ms. Upeksha Swarnamali said, “Suddenly they cancelled shooting in January. There is no reason for such cancellation. This situation arose when I said I support Gen. Sarath Fonseka. I am very disappointed regarding such acts. There were several invitations for me to support the government. However, I would support General.

Kuma Attanayake said, “We support apolitical Common Candidate Gen. Sarath Foneka to set in motion the 17th amendment, to abolish executive presidency and bring in good governance.

W. Jayasiri said, “Law abiding people were harassed during the past. We support General to establish good governance.

At least these are the only honourable artists in Sri Lanka All other so called artists sold themselves for Rs 50,000.- each and took part in a shameless display in an advertisement of Tharunyata Hetak in support of Rajapakse.

Even during this war, the government was able to give unexpected and unbeleivable facilities for the Artists and for the filming industry. I can understand why all leading artists came forward on behalf of the government and very few for the oposing side.

It is India that Stood & controlled the International pressure. India controlled the USA & other contries, it was India that wanted the LTTE to be finished & Sonia Ghandi wanted Justice Done to prbakaran for killing Rajiv. If india had sent warships to the north to halt the warwhat was Rajapaksa going to do fight the Indian forces, Norway becuase if that was possible it would had been done in 1987 by JR who was 100 times more intellegant than Rajapaksa. Mahinda only knows to take credit for what other people achived. why dont he take the blame for all the corruption that is going on, may be Mahinda has too much of experiance. ( ali baba & the 103 thieves )the Rajapaksa cabinet.

No Democracy, why people cannot go for own choice? there is no Law and order, people cannot speak, write and no fair & free media. These are the fundamental in any country if any genuine Democratic Path should have. We have to admit and very sad to say Democracy been zero in Sri-Lanka. All should be get together again to reestablish Democaracy do not miss valuable opportunity. We have seen last three weeks mud sliding from Government ministers to Strong Presidential Candidate SF, how media behaving? This is the politics in MR regime in Sri-Lanka? Suspected Personnel in custody unlawfully? after 4 yaers that Government came to know all are under low salaries and now benefits are offering to get vote. All these acts are doing in faithful manner to all Srilnkans? Think and get wise decision....

I appreciate the guts of these people who are brave enough to come forward. They will lose loads of priviledges but obviously they are true to their conscience. I was disgusted reading blogs about poor Upeksha! She will have to face lot of things and I wish her strength to face all problems.

In a democracy people should be able to say whatever they think, and vote for whatever party they like. In Sri Lanka, people could apparently lose their jobs for supporting the opposition. They could even receive threats. The democracy in Sri Lanka is in danger. Massacres were committed during the war. Journalists were killed. A journalist was sentenced for 20 years in prison for a couple of articles he wrote. My promise is that as long as these things continue to happen, Sri Lanka will not get that many investors into the country. Who would dare to invest in a country were the freedom is lost? I'm afraid the people will suffer for years to come if nothing changes. We need a change now! The question is: is Gen. Sarath Fonseka the right man for the job? I doubt it. If I would vote, none of these two candidates would get my vote.

Glad that our artistes who are the torchbearers of our culture and on whom the responsibility of passing onto generations unborn and the world at large the finest characteritics of our civilization, have joined hands to support the good General to implement his ten-point manifesto. Many an apolitical professional, not accepting the writer, have joined hands neither asking nor expecting any favors, to provide whatever assistance to help the General in his onward march.

At last honour of artists is secured. What is the situation if all the so called artists came forward to say MR is the sensitive and experienced leader while law, media, all other key institutions were poluted and all the wealth of people abused.
